sleep training while teething

We're planning to start sleep training this weekend using Ferber's check & console method. Our main goal is to help our 5-month-old daughter learn to fall asleep on her own at bedtime & daytime naps.

Problem is she's been a little bit distressed occasionally, ie. she erupts in crying that appears to be due to pain. It's very occasional, i.e. once or twice a week at bedtime, sometimes during the day.

Her sleep has also gotten somewhat fragmented in the past 2-3 weeks. Some nights she awakens two, three, four times at various times (including for her 1-2 night feeds). Other times she only awakens to feed twice.

We think it may be occasional discomfort due to teething, but we can't be sure since it's somewhat infrequent and irregular.

Any advice on how to approach the sleep training, and what we should do to minimize/manage her discomfort so it doesn't complicate things when we are letting her cry?

Hi Sara,

I replied to your other post too, so I will keep this brief!

Feel free to offer her pain reliever if you believe she is in discomfort from teething (talk to your Dr. first- of course).

A general guideline you can follow is if she is extra fussy during the day, I’d give her Motrin or Tylenol at
bedtime. If she has any night wakings 4-6+ hours (give or take 1 hour)
after the medication, you can give another dose.
Feel free to stay with her until the medication begins to work too. If she is waking otherwise at "non-dosing times" it may not be teething discomfort at all. It is usually only about 2-4 days of super fussy times that babes need
extra soothing until the tooth pops through.

Best of luck!!!!
