Sleeping away from home

Hello, my 14 month old is going to spend 3 nights at his grandparents' place for the first time.  Since they only recently came back to town after living elsewhere for a while, he's not that familiar with their house, although we see them quite a bit now.  My question is this – although he sleeps very well at home for naps and at night time (knock on wood!), he freaks out when I try to put him down in the pack n play at his grandparents house.  We stick to the same naptime routine, but he cries as soon as I put him down, and stands up, and he's very agitated.  So far we've only tried naps, and neither time did he fall asleep in the bed (he had to be rocked to sleep).  He doesn't really use a lovey or pacifier.  My plan is to try to put him in the pack n play at home for some naps and nights before trying again at his grandma's – but does anyone have any tips for getting him ready for overnight stays away from home?

That's a hard one. Sounds like you're doing a great job and are doing all the things I would think of. Would he respond to some sort of reward for sleeping in the pack n play? What about sitting next to him while he falls asleep then moving further from him as he gets more comfortable? Or maybe getting him nearly asleep and then putting him in it just before he drops off totally. Just some ideas but my oldest (now nearly 2) was never able to really sleep in a port a cot at home or elsewhere without an awful lot of crying and waking but yet the youngest (4 months) has no problem. Hopefully your little one will just end up accepting it with consistency and perserverence by mum and dad but it certainly can be a difficult journey to get there. Good luck! Let me know how you go.

Trying the pack and play at home for naps sounds like a good idea but you might want to keep in him in his crib at home so as to not confuse him about his home bed.

Have you tried having one of the grandparents put him down for a nap at their house without you there? Sometimes kids respond quite differently to going down for a nap when it's someone other than mom putting them down. I know when my son was a daycare he wuold go down for a nap in ways that never worked when it was just me and him.

Is the pack and play at grandma's in another bedroom? If the only time he goes in that room is at naptime, then he might be getting scared because it's such an unfamiliar room. Would it be possible to let him play in there a little bit at times that are not nap times? I'm just thinking it would be helpful to have the pack and play in place where he's familiar with the surroundings.

Hello, thank you both for the encouragement and great tips!  We are making progress, he's had 3 naps in 3 days in the pack n play at home, but there was a LOT of protesting too.  After his milk, instead of just kissing him and putting him into the bed (like I do with his crib), I would hold him longer and whisper to him before putting him down, kiss his stuffed toy, and leave the room crossing my fingers.  The first 2 days, he cried, then fell asleep. Today though, he went down without fussing and slept a full nap!  Tomorrow we are going to grandma's in the afternoon, and I may ask her to put him down while I take a walk, to see if that helps.   And letting him play in that room is a great idea, indeed it's not such a familiar place yet.

I know he'll be in great hands with his grandma, but somehow I still can't help being a bit nervous!!!  I'll keep you posted. Thank you!  Fareeda

Oh good. I'm glad to hear there's been some progress and that he seems to be adapting to napping the pack play. Sounds like your consistency and efforts are paying off.

Please keep us posted and let us know if there are any other changes we might be able to help troubleshoot.
