Rowan has been a poor sleeper from day one – he was one of those babies that required holding in order to sleep until about 3 months, and rarely sleeps for longer than 4 hours at a time without waking.

At 12 months, getting him to sleep isn't a huge issue – he often falls asleep taking his milk (either breastfed or expressed breastmilk), and if not will 9 times out of 10 be put down drowsy and fall asleep on his own.  The issue is keeping him asleep – he'll almost always be awake within an hour of going to bed and will require rocking or patting to soothe him back to sleep, after this he'll be up at last 2-5 times throughout the night, always requiring being picked up and soothed before being put back into his crib.  These past few weeks he's been particularly awful and will often be wide awake for 2-4 hours in the middle of the night (generally between 1-4am).  He's perfectly content if I'm sitting in with him, but if I leave during this period he has a complete meltdown.

He's usually breastfeeds between 5-6am then goes back to bed for an hour and is up between 7-8am each morning.  He has breakfast between 8-9am, then playtime until his   4oz bottle of cows milk or breastfeed andnap at around 10-10:30am that can be anywhere from 45 mins to 90 mins.  Lunch is between 11:30-noon followed by more playtime and another bottle/breastfeed and nap between 1:30-2:30 (depending on the length of the morning nap), again for 45-90 mins.  He has another bottle/breastfeed at 3-3:30 and supper is around 5pm.  His bedtime is generally between 6-7 (depending on how he's doing) and he gets a bath, massage with lavender lotion, and a 6oz bottle of expressed breastmilk before going down for the night.

We've tried ever sleep method going with zero success – I even broke down and tried Ferberising but to no avail.  Even after crying himself to sleep he still wakes up as often.  Luckily, he doesn't seem too worse for wear during the day – he's a happy, personable little chap, but I'm not doing as well!!! I'm running out of ideas to try to help him (and me) get a good nights sleep, and I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever get past this.

Hi there-

I hope that Rowan's sleep has improved since you posted!

If not, I do hope we can help you!

Because you stated that you have tried many sleep training methods, I would recommend that you consider one on one consultations with Nicole. She can help you with a sleep plan that builds on what you have already tried, and will follow your parenting styles. I'd say our Basic Email Consultation
package, where you will receive the personalized sleep plan plus one email for
follow up after you have worked on implementing the sleep plan strategies would be a good place to start. We
also have a Deluxe Email consultation package which provides you the
personalized sleep plan plus three email follow up consultations if you feel
you might need additional support beyond what the Basic package offers.

You can read about all of our sleep consultation packages and
purchase directly online here: http://babysleepsite.com/services

It sounds as if you have some sleep association issues in that he falls asleep nursing or drinking, and the fact that he stays up for hours in the middle of the night may mean a scheduling problem. Could he be over tired or not tired in the night because he is sleeping too much?

Here is a sample schedule:

7:00 – Wake

7:00/7:30 – Breakfast

9:30 – Light snack if she needs it

10:00 – Morning Nap (at least 1 hour)

11:30/12:00 – Lunch

2:00 – Afternoon Nap (at least 1 hour)

3:30 – Afternoon Snack

5:30 – Dinner

6:30 – Begin bedtime routine

7:00 – Bedtime

I hope this helps,

Debbye
