8 week feeding and bedtime schedule problems, help!

Not sure if 8 week old babies have a nap schedule or a feeding schedule yet. I would love that but my husband and I have been confused on what is going on the last 5 days.

My son turned 8 weeks yesterday, since 6 weeks his napping during the day and feeding schedule during the day has been all over the place.  He is taking 5 oz feedings (4 oz if he is sleepy at times during a feeding)

Example: wakes at 5-5:30 am (we would like 6-6:30 am when I go back to work in 4 weeks), is up until 7 am and then naps until 8:30 am when I wake him up for diaper change and clothing change.  Feeds at 8:30 am but is very sleepy and hard to arouse during this feeding.  Falls asleep immediately after feeding.  Continues to sleep until next feeding at 11:30 am when I wake him up.  He is napping in the living room in his bouncy or the swing or on a blanket on the floor, with curtains open, tv on, this kid can sleep with noise and there is no waking him up!  Now he is up after his feeding, playing, smiling, on the activity mat, etc.  Might take a short nap around 1-1:30 to be fed again at 2-2:30 either he wakes up usually or I wake him up again for the 3 hour mark.  So after this afternoon feeding he is usually up, playing but then around 4 or so he gets fussy and sometimes he naps and sometimes he does not.  He gets the next feeding around 5.  After this feeding he is up but soon gets cranky and wants to fall asleep around 6 pm.  His next bottle would be at 8 pm before bedtime where he goes right to sleep with or without the binkie until 1-2 am.

My issue is, how am I to do a nighttime routine for bed if he wants to sleep?  Also that morning napping I just described is not always the case, sometimes he is up and plays and quickly naps and other times he is asleep most of the morning.  I have also tried getting him in the tub at that 6-6:30 time when he is fussy and he loves the bath but the minute he is out of the water, he crys and screams while I put his pj's on, forget the massage, he is crying to much.  He is hungry, this is sometimes only 2 hrs after the prior bottle.  My husband thinks he is tired and not hungry just yet, I think it is a combination of both.

My other issue is that he has already elimanted the 10 pm bottle himself when he was 6 weeks old.  So he will sleep until 1-2 am and then only sleep 3-4 hrs and wake up at that 5 am.  Why can't he go another 5 hrs after the 1-2 am feeding?

Before 4 months of age, a baby's sleep is still rather disorganized

so it's okay to just help your son get to sleep however he needs to and not worry

too much about bad sleep habits or a strict schedule yet. Between 4-6 months is when most babies start to gain the ability to self soothe which is a necessary skill for successful sleep

training. Generally, it is quite common for some babies to not "handle" being put on a strict schedule until around 4+ months as well. At 8 weeks, you can still feed him and sleep him on demand. However, you may find these articles about newborn sleep to be

helpful to you now and as a part of starting to teach him good sleep habits, and getting on the right road to a godd routine/schedule.

Concerning your question about sleeping in a longer stretch in the early morning, the first stretch of sleep in thre night is very often the longesst or "best" sleep of the night, and it is quite common for babies to asleep lighter in the early morning hours. This may be why your baby is not sleeing quite as well at that second stretch.

Believe it or not, your baby seems to be sleeping pretty well for his young age! Stick it out, and continue to teach good habits, and I think you will alll be sleeping better soon!!!
