3 Month Old and Naps

My 3 month old daughter sleeps good at night in her bassinet. We put her down after swaddling, feeding and rocking around 9:30-10pm and she usually wakes 3am for a bottle than goes back to sleep until 6 or 7am. Her naps however are a nightmare. I try the same routine that I use when putting her to bed for the night but the longest she will sleep is 20 minutes- if she stays at all. She wakes up still sleepy (yawning and rubbing her eyes). As the day goes on she becomes more and more cranky because she has not slept even though I keep trying to put her down for her naps. I have tried putting her in her swing, her crib, swaddling, white noise, making the room dark, and a few other techniques and nothing works. I always put her down when she shows signs of sleepiness (which is often since her naps are short to non at all). By the end of the day she is screaming her head off because she is soo tired! I am at a loss as to what to do for her. Cry

Hi-

At 3 months of age, a baby's sleep is still rather disorganized so it's okay to just help your daughter get to sleep however she needs to and not worry too much about bad sleep habits yet. You can try anything that will work to help her go back to sleep for a bit more nap (I held and nursed my son at naptimes for months, as the only way I could find to lenghten naps), and make sure that she is napping enough. It is also very common for infants to take short catnaps throughout the day, and many will keep these catnaps until about 6 months of age. It sounds like she is sensitive to being overtired, so you will want to be sure to keep her awake times very short, no longer than 1-2 hours, tops. If she is overtired, offer even more naps, before the usual tired signs. Keep in mind that she will outgrow this stage. You may find these articles about newborn sleep to be

helpful to you now and as a part of starting to teach good sleep habits.
