night-weaning and stoppin co-sleeping with 1 year old

My baby is about to turn one and I've decided it's time to move Sienna to her own crib.  We've co-slept and nursed throughout the night until now.  She wakes up 2 to 3 times to nurse.  She only falls alseep peacefully with nursing.  I only put her down for naps without me in the swing, and she cries pretty hard for 5 minutes or so and then falls asleep.

I'm a kindergarten teacher working full-time and would like to use my upcoming week of spring break to deal with sleep training.  I'm worrying this is more of a 2 week deal.

I think I should spend a week night-weaning her while we co-sleep, and then transition to putting her in the crib?  Is that best?  Also, for night-weaning, from what I've gathered so far,  I refuse her the breast for a half-hour (??- that seems long) when she wakes to nurse (which I assume she'll cry the whole time or wake herself up completely or fall asleep) and then if she's awake I nurse her but make sure she does not fall alseep on the breast.  I then let her cry herself to sleep without patting her, rocking her, etc.  I then extend the time between feedings incrementaly.  Then, not sure how to best deal with switching to the crib and how long I should wait between the two transitions.  My doctor said to switch to the crib, if that's what I wanted to do, before age 1 or it would be harder.

Any advice or clarification on what I've written would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!  What an important forum we have here!

Hi there-

I wish you best of luck with your night weaning and sleep training, and how long it takes really depends on your daughter. Many at this age will take 2 weeks, but some can handle it in 1 week.

Here is an article about transitioning to a crib that may be useful:

http://www.babysleepsite.com/how-we-sleep/baby-wont-sleep-crib/" href="http://www.babysleepsite.com/how-we-sleep/baby-wont-sleep-crib/" target="_blank">http://www.babysleepsite.com/h…..leep-crib/

The night weaning and the sleep training/moving her to the crib can be combined or worked
on separately. It depends on your preferences for how you would like to sleep
train, the approach to take, as well as the temperament of your daughter. Often,
you can begin to work on both with an approach that works slowly to offer one
less feeding at night. You decide beforehand at which night wakings you will allow a
feeding (such as: only if it's been at least 4 hours since the last feeding)
and then only feed during those times. Gradually, one feeding at a time, you work towards no feedings.
This way, she has time to adjust to less milk at night and work on eating more
during the day so you know it's not an issue of hunger when she wakes. And
during this time, you would be working on helping her get back to sleep for
those wakings where she's not feeding, so that she is beginning to learn how to
go back to sleep on her own without feeding. And at the same time, or after she is night weaned, she can learn how to sleep in her bed. It sounds like a lot, but just try to take it day by day.

If you would like additional assistance with this, I do believe you
will benefit from one of our Personalized Family Sleep Consultation packages,
where we will work with you on a detailed plan you can commit to and feel good
about.

You can read about all of our sleep consultation packages and

I hope that this helps. We look forward to working with you and
helping you and your family sleep, and please contact us with any further
inquiries!
