Night weaning and early morning waking – help

My little guy is having trouble sleeping in several ways overnight. He was born 9 weeks early, so though he's 11 months old, really his development is that of a 9 month old.

Before daylight savings time, he was sleeping 6pm to 6/6:30am and waking up once or twice a night to nurse. Since daylight savings time, we have moved his schedule ahead a total of two hours (naps and feedings and everything) to 7pm with a goal of a 7am wake. But things have not worked out that way.

He is still waking twice a night to nurse, usually around 1am and 4-5am. Once in a great while he'll sleep till 7am or 7:15am, but usually he's waking up around 6am and can't get himself back to sleep. This is hard b/c we moved his naptimes and everything and so his first nap isn't till 10:00. That's a long stretch for him if he wakes up that early. We've tried letting him CIO for a week – no later than 6:45, but no success.

Frustrated, this weekend I took him to my bed when he woke up and let him nurse off one breast while we were both laying down, and he fell back asleep till after 7:00. I've done this the last three days and it has always resulted him him going back to sleep and sleeping till after 7:00.

But I don't want this to become a habit that he can't sleep without! Plus, he's recently decided that he's done with the paci as a soother, so that doesn't help, either. If I go in his room to try and soothe him, he just gets more agitated. Any ideas?

Also, why is he still waking twice to nurse? If I wanted to wean him off one, which should I try to wean? The 1am or the 4-5am? And how do I do that?

That's an older post, but we are having similar issues with our 10-month old. We night-weaned our daughter at 9 months (by sending her father in to soothe her, no mom, no milk, and eventually no wake up). She was doing well, sleeping 11 or sometimes 12 hours a night from 6:30 or 7 pm until about 6:00 am. I go in and nurse her and we're up for the day.

Then a few things happened: daylight savings so now we're an hour early anyway (so the 6 am wake up became 5 am), and then she started walking at 10 months. Now she regularly wakes up at 4:45 or 5 am and it is really painful. (Naps are now a mess too, it seems like it's a vicious cycle.) We think the walking has a lot to do with it. First we want to fix the early wake up, then the naps should get back on schedule. She's also not getting enough sleep right now, total for the day is about 12.5 hours (she used to get between 13 and 14).

We've tried a few things: earlier to bed (hasn't helped), CIO (definitely doesn't work, she just gets more upset), bringing her to our bed (too interesting for her so she gets excited instead of sleeping more), treating it like a night waking (I nurse and try to put her back to bed – feels like we're going backwards). The only thing left is to try a later bedtime, which is next. Any one else ever work through this problem? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I would highly recommend that you check out Nicole's ebook on Shifting Schedules which can help both with nap issues and especially with early waking. Generaly just shifting her bedtime isn't the solution. It takes shifting her whole day schedule usually in increments of15 minutes per day until you are at the right wake up time. It's a whole process that is much more that I can describe here which is why I recommend the book.

You can read more about it here:

Hope this helps!
