Does anyone have any advice on how to improve a babies 45 min naps at nursery. My 10 month old DD will only nap for 45 min and as she has transitioned to two naps means that if the last nap starts at 1ish she is awake over 5 hours until bedtime. Too long for her to handle.

Thanks

Hi there,

It can be hard to get naps to extend when babies are in a daycare environment. While at least an hour nap is more the ideal, two 45 minutes really aren't that bad if she's sleep well at night. It's really more of a schedule problem in that her last nap of the day need to be pushed to a later time like around 2. If that's not possible, then I'd recommend you try putting her down a little earlier. Take a look at this post which provides a couple of different daily schedule options for a 10 month old and then see where your schedule varies and where you might be able to more closely shift your schedule to one like Nicole suggests.

Here is the post: http://www.babysleepsite.com/s…..-schedule/

Please post back and let us know how its going or provide us with some additional details so we can continue to help you troubleshoot.

Hi just thought i would update. My LO is still taking short naps at nursery, soemtimes 10-25 mins. But now she has got over her cold she is sleeping through the night despite the short naps. They are napping her at 10 and 2 now, so its not too long before bedtime.

This weekend she has napped twice a day 10 and 2 and has slept about 1.5 to 2.5 hours per naps (which has never happened before!!!), and again has continued to sleep through the night, so i suppose it just goes to show that they will adapt to their environment, and it appears that she is making up for the missed sleep in the week, at the weekend….just means we get less playtime at weekends :-(, but at least shes a happy bunny :-)

Thanks for the advice….from a mum who needs to stop worring!!!

Oh, this is great news. I'm so glad to hear that she's worked it! Babies and kids are so resilient that sometimes I know I forget that they can often figure out what works for them with less help from us.

And you are right, even though her make up sleep on the weekend means a little less play time, at least she's happy for when she is awake. Plus she's helping set her body clock for a lifetime of healthy sleep habits. Eventually, she'll transition to one nap and then no naps and you'll have quite a bit of playtime!
