Nap length and wake time question.

My son's typical schedule these days is to wake between 6/6:30am, nap from 10-11:15/11:30, nap from 3:00-3:45/4:00, to bed at 7:00pm.

I was just wondering if I could get him to sleep in longer in the morning if for awhile I limited his daytime naps to one hour – instead of trying to shift his sleep schedule forward.

Part of me thinks this sounds fairly mean, since it took FOREVER for him to learn to nap longer than 40 minutes at a time, but it'd be really nice for me if he would reliably sleep till 6:30/7:00am – I could take a shower in the morning without worrying that I'm going to have to ignore his cries for 20 minutes while I get ready!

Thoughts?

jbatts: i have a similar issue in that my son likes to wake up around 6-6:30 (sometimes earlier…today it was 5:45) although he will on occasion sleep until 7am.  He goes to bed around 7:30pm and moving that earlier never really helped things (unless he didn't sleep well during the day).  He sleeps quite a bit during the day (1.5-2 hrs per nap), so in my discussions with Nicole at one point she did suggest limiting his naps so that he would get more sleep at night.  I decided to just leave it because, like you, he took until 4-5 months before he was consistently sleeping longer than 45 mins, and I get up early for work, so it's only a bother on the weekends.  I guess it depends on whether your son does tend to sleep the same amount overall each day – ie. if he doesn't sleep as well during the day does he tend to catch up on it at night, or vice versa?  In the end, I decided to leave his night sleep as is, since he's happy with it, and those >45min naps were hard won!  good luck!

So, okay, i totally jinxed myself with the last post and my son's wake up times have gotten earlier and earlier (to the point of 5:15am rising, oh joy!), and has even added in a long night waking just for fun.  His naps have been compensating and he's sleeping over 4 hours (close to 5!) during the day.  So, after chatting with Nicole, I will be limiting his naps to 1.5 hrs in order to shift some of his sleep back to the night time.  Today is my first day trying it and he did remarkably well after his first nap given how little sleep he got at night.  I woke him up after 90 mins but i'm sure he would have gone well over 2 hours had I let him.  I went over my old sleep logs and noticed that he's been sleeping 3.5-4hrs + 10.5hrs since he was about 4.5 months, so I suppose it's not unrealistic that it's time to shorten the first nap before he drops it completely.  I will try to keep the bedtime fairly early tonight as I'm sure he's going to be overtired (I know I am!).  So Jbatts i will let you know how it goes. :)

pgardner – thanks for those thoughts. I'll be curious to hear how things go for you.

I guess since my son's naps are virtually never longer than 1.5 hours (and that's only the morning one – the afternoon one is never longer than 1 hour) I'm thinking I should leave well enough alone. This too shall pass, right? But wow, 6am just comes way before I'm ready for it.

Perhaps when daylight savings time returns I'll not shift his schedule at all… hopefully resulting in a 8pm bedtime and a 7am naptime?
