Early wakings…intervene or ride them out?

hiya

my son will be 9 months old on sunday. just looking for some guidance re: our newest sleep issue – the 5:15am wake-up. ick. so my LO was on a great schedule where bedtime was 7pm, he woke between 3-4am for a quick little feed (one side only) and then back to sleep til usually 6:30. he naps twice a day for a total of 3 hours.

in the past 3 weeks we've battled croup, travelled to florida where he's sleeping in a pack-n-play, gone through daylight savings time, started crawling forwards and pulling up on furniture…a multitude of potentially sleep-changing issues therefore i'm not surprised that things have taken a turn for the worse. we ended up having to resort to re-sleep training (i.e. CIO) for a night to get him back on track so that he wasn't waking 3-4 times a night requiring feeding and being rocked back to sleep. that seems to have sorted itself out but the early morning wake-ups are lingering. i've moved his bedtime to 6:30pm because a lot of what i've read on early wake-ups are that they are overtired and need an earlier bedtime. should it be even earlier?

maybe i just need to be more patient and let this ride out…there is the 9-10 month sleep regression that may be the root of the problem and things will sort themselves out on their own

Hi Colleen-

You seem to have a LOT of things working against a good night sleep, and everything considered- you're doing great!

Your son may just need more time to adjust to all that has been going on in the last few weeks, and may surprise you by pulling through after a couple more weeks of adjustment. If you do "wait it out," just be sure not to introduce any new sleep associations, and not encourage the early wakeups. Sometimes it simply takes a few days of leaving your child to fall back to sleep to break the cycle of waking up too early. You might need to check on him, soothe him, or resettle him, but in general, treat a 5 a.m. waking the same as a 12 a.m. waking. Many Babies at 9 months do eat in the night still, so feel free to continue to nurse him if he wakes hungry. I would not go too much earlier on bedtime, though you'll have to gauge what time he is actually ready for sleep at night. Hopefully things will smooth out…

Good luck!
