11-month-old night waking

Hi there,

I have a great little 11-mo-old boy with some serious night-waking problems. He's never been a great sleeper, although he did "tease" us with some 8-hour sleep sessions back in January. He goes down like a champ, but won't stay down. I'm looking for some advice on how to get him sleeping longer at night. Here's his basic schedule:

6:30/7:00 – wake & nurse

8:00 – breakfast

9:00 – morning nap (1-2 hrs)

11:30 – lunch

1:30/2:00 – nap (weekends only. won't nap at daycare)

2:00 – bottle @ daycare

4:00 – snack/dinner

5:30 – pickup from daycare/nurse

6:00 – snack/dinner

7:00 – bath/bedtime routine

7:30 – asleep

12:00 – wake & nurse

3:00 – wake & nurse

5:00 – wake & nurse

A couple of notes, he goes to daycare in the afternoons only & just won't sleep there. It's a bigger corporate center & I don't know how hard they "try" to get him to sleep. His morning nap is consistent. Finally, when he wakes at night he might only actually truly nurse at the 12:00 waking. Also, he screams for for 30+ min when we put him down awake, even if we're by the bed soothing him.

My husband and I are tired and frustrated and just want a decent stretch of sleep. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be great. Thank you.

Hi-

Can you talk to the daycare about "trying harder" to get him to nap? That is a very long time till bedtime if he is waking from his nap at 10 or 11am! Being overtired is not helping his already fractured sleep. His morning nap may be a bit early too. You may find this series of articles about sleep training helpful, as it sounds like you may be ready (or tired enough) to work on getting him to sleep on his own-

What happens after the 30+ minutes when you put him down awake? Does he fall asleep on his own?

I'll talk to the daycare again. I think it might be time to start considering other providers, although we really only have a month left before we're on summer break (I'm a teacher).

We actually had some progress last week after a CIO session a couple weeks ago. He was sleeping well, but then regressed last night. He was up every 1-2 hours, and of course it wasn't helping that we didn't let him cry that time. Tonight he's been up every 1.5 hrs since he went to be at 7 (it's not 9:30 & he's been awake twice). We have no idea what's caused this regression. And he had two decent naps today as well. We just started a CIO, but then heard a "thud", so of course rushed upstairs not knowing what it was. Turned out to be his pacifier, and now DH is up there with him. We're basically at the end of our rope.

I think I will get a membership, but any other advice is greatly appreciated.

We all have off nights, and consistency will help get him back on track. I think you will benefit greatly from a membership… I know I did!
