11 1/2 month old uses pacifier to fall asleep for naps

my 11 1/2 months boy is very active and he has been a terrible sleeper since the beginning. we are now trying to teach him how to sleep at night and improve his naps.

we taught him how to fall asleep on his own at night by letting him cry only at bedtime, but he still wakes up a couple of times during night (1-3) which is better than before, and sometimes he sleeps through the night.

when he wakes up during night i pick him up and give him a pacifier and hold him and he plays with my hair while he falls asleep and then i put him back in the crib.

whats the best way to go from here to teach him to sleep through the night?

another issue that i have is at nap times. i also use a pacifier and hold him  and he plays with my hair until he falls asleep and then i put him in his crib. he wakes up once or twice and i do the same to put him back to sleep. my goal is for him to fall asleep on his own, so is it better if i got him of the pacifier first, and then teach him how to fall asleep in his crib, or teach him to fall asleep in his crib with the pacifier then take the pacifier, or do it both at the same time?

thanks anyone for any help, i had a lot of problems since the beginning, i still didn't get a good nights rest for almost a year.

Hi Jelena,

It would be best if you teach him to fall asleep on his own without the pacifier unless he think he's able to learn how to find and replace the pacifier on his own without your help. Which it doesn't sounds like that's the case if you have to go in at and give him the pacifier to help him go back to sleep.

At night when he wakes, it would be better if you go in and pat and reassure him but don't pick him up. Allow him to fall back asleep in his crib and on his own. If he starts to cry for a prolonged period of time or gets really worked up, then pick him up just enough to calm him but then lay him back down to back to sleep. Keep telling him it's night night time and time to go sleep. This might mean several nights of picking him and putting him down multiple times, but he's at an age, where after a few days, he's going to start to learn what the limits are and will start to put himself to sleep.

The same concepts apply for naps. And actually, it would be better to work on his naps before working on nighttime sleep. Once naps are sorted out then you can start to work on the nightwakings. Laugh

For more help with naps, I would recommend Nicole's book, Mastering Naps and Schedules which you can find at http://babynapswell.com
