Sudden Middle of Night Awakening

My 8 month old son has been sleeping 12 hours straight through the night since about 4 1/2 months. I have no idea how I got so luck! But all of a sudden he has been waking almost every night. He wakes up crying and will ususally go back to sleep by himself within 5 min or so. However, there are times that I will go in there after 10 min of crying and give him back his pacifier and rub his back/belly. There have also been a handful of times when he wouldn't settle down and therefore we would give him a bottle. He has also been a lot fussier during the day the last couple of weeks. He doesn't have any of his teeth yet, so could this be a sign that one will pop through soon?

Hi there,

For a baby who has been sleeping well and then all of a sudden stops, it's usually either a growth spurt, teeth or an ear infection. If he's fussier during the day, I would bet it's the teeth. Have you tried Motrin or Tylenol or Teething Tablets (they're natural). A dose at bedtime and another in the middle of the night, if necessary, can help during the height of teething. After the teeth pop through, he'll most likely go back to sleeping well again. Smile

Good luck!

Take care,

Nicole

Hi!

I kind of have the same problem so I will not start another post.

My baby, 8 mo now, started cutting one tooth at 7 mo 1 week, exact same behavior as jgentner described here. He was not in so much pain, so the tylenol did a good job (I have since bought something natural that works also)…

My problem is that he still wakes up. He doesn't cry, unless he rolls on his tummy and can't roll back (in his crib he cannot do it that well). Sometimes I take him with me to bed and he plays and rolls for 2-3 hours, and i cannot put him back to sleep. I did start with all the nono's that I was able to cure: rocking (my arms fell off:)), nursing, singing…he won't sleep.

usually he sleeps 11 hours at night and 2 naps (1 hour), eats 5 times a day, solids 2 times.

his schedule is 6-6:30 wake up 9:30 nap 1:30 nap 6:30 sleep

he nurses 2 time at night, but before all this he would go right back to sleep.

so what can I do?

also, if he wakes up several hours at night, when will he catch up on his sleep? I try to keep up with the schedule but he is sooo grumpy and cries if he's too tired. I also wake him if he naps for more than 1h30.

Thank you!
