Shortening Naps

My almost 9 month old son has stopped napping longer than 40-50 minutes. We recently have begun lengthing the time he is awake first thing in the morning from 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours because he wouldn't fall asleep quickly anymore after being up for only one hour. He repsonded very well to this and was taking two 2 hours naps and maybe a 40 minute nap in the late afternoon. This only lasted 4 days. Starting yesterday his naps have ranged from 40-50 minutes long. He doesn't wake up crying, but just talking to himself. I've always left him in his crib for at least one hour for each nap and that will usually allow him to fall back to sleep for a much longer time. Unfortunatly leaving him in for that hour hasn't been working so I even extended it for 1 1/2 hours, but that still isn't working! I am not sure what to do??? He's not extremely cranky, but is a bit fussier than ususal. I did notice last night that he has a little hole/cave where his first tooth will be popping out in the next few days. Coud this have anything to do with it?

I realize every child is different, but at his age that interval between waking and morning nap seems awfully short to me, even at 1 1/2 hrs. My 9 month old wakes up b/t 6:00 and 7:00am and goes down for his morning nap at 9:00am.

Granted, he will sleep for only about 40-50 minutes about 50% of the time (so I feel your pain) but we've been battling that since he was 3 months old.

It seems to me that lately, my son has rapidly been able to increase his ability to be awake for longer stretches, so maybe that is part of what is going on with your little guy. Hope that helps…

I agree to try more wake-time at this age. Have you checked out the sample schedules? Is he on 2 or 3 naps, now? If he's still on 3 naps, it makes sense that 3 would be on the shorter side until he transitions to just two naps.

Fussiness during the day can definitely be the teeth.

Hope this helps!

Take care,

Nicole
