We are getting ready to start sleep training for our 6 month old but we're not sure what to do when he rolls over on his belly, which he is doing frequently during the night. Typically he cries when this happens. He has rolled back before but he is not an expert at getting back over. Should we help him roll back over when this happens?

I'm in this boat too! My son is 6.5 months and is great at rolling over in one direction on to his tummy, but he hasn't mastered rolling back on to his back. I always put him down to sleep on his back, but he ends up eventually rolling over and falling asleep on his tummy. If I check on him and try to flip him back over he wakes up and takes a long time to get back to sleep, so I've just started leaving him on his tummy. He sleeps in a sleep sack, so there are no loose blankets for him to get tangled up near his face or anything, and he is strong enough to lift his upper body up, but I'm sure it's probably not the best thing to sleep on his tummy. I just know that it would be a fight all day/night long to get him to stay on his back.

Hi Ariana,
Usually they begin to master rolling from tummy to back in fairly short order so it's a limited time phase and as long as you remain consistent with what you are doing for sleeping training, then you will see results. Go ahead and help him roll back over if he wakes and is crying. If he's not crying, and you feel comfortable, then go ahead and leave him on his tummy. And when I say if you feel comfortable with it, I mean it's up to you to evaluate if you feel this is a safe way for him to be sleeping. As mojobaby said, if he's strong enough to lift his upper body, then he's probably safe for sleeping on his tummy.
