Nap length at 8 months

My eight month old son goes to bed at 7:30 and wakes at 5:30. Sometimes he'll fall back to sleep but I always leave him in his crib until 6 am. He takes his first nap at 8-8:30 and sleeps for 1 1/2 hours.  Then he goes back for his second nap around 3 and has only been sleeping for 30 to 45 min.  I think he's an average good sleeper. So my two questions are:

1) How can I get him to wake up later. I'm not asking for much, just until 6.  I realize that he is really waking at 7due to the time change, so will time make him wake up later and later?

2) His longest nap is by far his morning nap. He has 2 1/2 to 3 hrs of awake time, so by the time he goes down his nap is fairly consistent at 1 1/2 hrs.  I know babies this age should be sleeping 2-3 hours during the day.  So if he only sleeps his 30-45 min. in the afternoon, is this sufficient nap time for him during the day?

He is in very good spirits and very active and energetic. So maybe he just doesn't need that much sleep.  I know the afternoon nap is usually the longest.  Him waking up at 10 am and taking a 30 min. nap in the afternoon makes it a very long stretch until bed time. Those days I put him down by 7.

What do you all think? Are most or some of you going through this. The change in sleep habits is definitely apparent. Many changes: he's beginning to crawl (creep), no teething yet, but very interactive.

Thanks

This is close to the schedule we have (nap-wise) for my almost 10-month-old.

Wake at 8, nap 10-11:30, nap 2:30-3ish, bed at 7.

I unfortunately have no advice for you to get her to sleep in longer. With the time change, did she do OK with the change in bedtime?

I do know that babies vary in the amount of sleep they need.  I think that if yours is sleeping through the night and although is waking earlier than you would like, you shouldn't worry.  And I'm assuming he isnt grumpy during the day when he has that long stretch of awake time?

Sounds like you get some time (like me) during the day to yourself.  Yay! :)

Sorry I can't be of much help!

It's counter-intutive, but given he is taking a short nap in the afternoon (common), 7:30 might be a too-late bedtime that can cause night-wakings and/or waking too early in the morning. Given his schedule, I'd probably bump bedtime earlier by 15-30 minutes and see if that improves the wake-up time. I know it's scary to think that he'll wake earlier, but at this age, it's normal for them to sleep 11-12 hours at night, so he most likely needs the sleep.

Good luck!

Take care,

Nicole
