I have a 7.5 mth old bub with silent reflux (she is on meds for it) – we are trying to get her on some sort of schedule. She will sleep about 8-9 hrs each nite (usually not before 9pm)Cry, naps very rarely during the day & is just getting so overtired. TRying to get her to sleep is the biggest problem & can take anything from 30 mins to 3 hrs (she can sleep as little as 1 hr in 12 some days) & the best way to get her to sleep is to lay next to her & continually rub her back until she's asleep, then move her to her cot (& then usually she wakes up after 15 mins so do it all again!) I have tried leaving her in the cot to self-settle (various techniques) but she just stands up & screams & cries (even if I go in at various times to settle her down as soon as I leave it starts again) – I usually give up after an hour. Any suggestions on getting her to sleep, should i leave her to cry (I also have a 6 yr old who is feeling very dejected as her baby sis is taking all of my time & my husband works away so I am on my own basically). I am at my wits end.

Hi there-

I  am sorry that you are having such sleep problems. I know first hand how hard it is, and know all about reflux babies. I think before too much "formal" sleep training, you will first want to be sure that she is on the right medication, and that it is not the reflux that is bothering her. Then you can feel confident in choosing a sleep training method, and stick to it. Consistency is key, so make a plan that you feel comfortable stcking with for at least one week straight. You mentioned leaving and checking on her, and it is common for this to continue for an hour or more, but the time should decrease as she learns that she can fall asleep on her own. If you are concerned about leaving her to cry, continue with the leave and check method, but stick it out till she falls asleep!

It sounds like you have done some research, and have tried various methods already, perhaps you can consider a  sleep consultation? You can read about the various packages here:

I wish you luck, and let us know how it goes!

Thankyou for your advice. we are now seeing a chiropractor, have just had her meds increased & are changing to goats milk formula to try & fix the reflux problem first & foremost – then I will persist with the settling techniques.Confused
