Developing a Solids Schedule and Updating Routine / Teething / Growth Spurt

Lots of issues in this one, but I will keep it simple :)

Our son is 6 months old.  He was sleeping through the night with only one night feeding.  Bed routine at 5:30, asleep by 6pm until about 1 or 2am.  Nurse for 10 mins, asleep until 5:30-5:45am.  Naps are around 3 a day.  He can only go about 2 hrs of wake time before needing another nap.  First question, is this normal for his age?  Some make it out like he should only be gettiing 2 naps (9 & 1pm) at this point.  It doesn't work, I have tried.  Oh and I would like to also add he uses a "lovey" and paci to sleep for naps and at night.  Not sure if this is bad, but it works for him.

I would like to develop a schedule for feeding solids.  We have only introduced a few things on the weekends and he still isn't perfect on eating.  I would love it if we coudl time it to when we are home with him rather than daycare since he is still very much "learning" and is slow.

This is our typical weekend:

5:45 Up

7:45-8:30 Nap (~45-60 mins)

10:30-Noon Nap (~1hr to 1 1/2 hrs)

2:30-3:45 (~1 hr)

5:30 Night routine

5:45-6pm Asleep

1-2am Nurse and asleep until AM wake up

Typical nursings are after naps for me on the weekend.  He tends to follow this at day care.  Husband drops him off at daycare around 7:20-7:30 each morning and I pick him up around 3:45pm.  What would you guys suggest for feedings for a beginner?

I would also like to qualify that as of last night his teeth are REALLY bothering him.  The only way we could get him to sleep was with infant tylenol.  I did what it took at midnight (rocking and jiggling) to get him to settle back into sleep for 5 hrs.  This is a major adjustment from being spoiled with such great sleeps for us both. Laugh  I am hoping once the pain subsides and the tooth breaks through the hard spot on his gums all will go back.  I am not stressing out at this point (yet!).

Last question.  Once we get him back on track after the teething, how do you adjust his bed time to sleep later.  5:30-5:45 is rough on us.  I would love it if could be more like 6am or even 6:30, but if we can keep this working and work in solids I am not as worried.  Plus we do get a lot done on weekends with the early wake up, haha!

Does this sound typical for his age?  Do I really need to worry about solids and how much he is eating at this point?  Any tips or pointers to get through this rough teething patch?  I surely do not want to start up old habits again with the night rocking.

Thanks everyone for the help.  Please let me know if something isn't clear.

Hi Andrea,

Thank you for sharing your schedule! And I will try to answer all of your questions…

1. Sleep patterns are different for every baby, and I would not worry about his naps yet. He will most likely settle into longer wake times in the next couple of months. Have you read the blog article this week? I think it will be helpful!

2. As long as the pacifier for sleep works for you and him, then it is not a problem!

3. Solids- He is still quite young, and breastmilk is better than any solid food at this point! Do not worry about taking things slow, as long as his growth and development are on track of course. A website that has been very useful to me on baby food is this one: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com

I think it will help you a lot too.

4. You can try to shift/adjust his schedule a bit by moving everything in his day ahead by 15 minutes every couple of days. He may be on the young side for this, as he will have to endure being over tired at first during the change. Wait if you can, or just give it a shot and see how he does…

Lastly, yes teething does interrupt sleep, but it sounds like you are on top of things with Tylenol, and not introducing TOO many sleep associations that will be hard to change later. Usually you will have a rough few days because of teeth, then things will begin to smooth out.

I wish you the best of luck!!!
