8 month old night waking

Hi I am new to this site. My almost 8-month old son has just recently started sleeping in his crib at night. He had been sleeping in a swing since he was a month or so old due to acid reflux and needing to sleep somewhat upright. We have been trying the "Ferber" method for about 7 days now. We put him in the crib awake and if he starts crying we go in every now and then and check on him and comfort him. He has been doing pretty good with going to sleep on his own when I first put him down at around 7:30, but the main problem is he wakes up between 11:00 and 12:00 and cries and cries and won't go back to sleep. The last couple of nights I have gone in to get him after about an hour of crying and given him a bottle because I feel like  maybe he's hungry and that's why he won't go back to sleep. But I don't know if he's really hungry or if he is crying because he wants me to come get him out of the crib. I feel like I'm giving in by getting him up and giving him a bottle, but I don't want him to be hungry either! Doesn't it confuse him by getting him up and giving him a bottle in the middle of the night but not getting him up when he cries at other times? Once he gets his bottle I lay him back in his crib awake and he typically sleeps the rest of the night…although he might wake up every now and then tossing and turning but he goes back to sleep quickly and easily.

Hi Ashley,

Welcome to the Baby Sleep Site!

I am sorry that you are having a hard time, and hope that it's not too late to try and help!!

It has been almost a month since your post, and hopefully you and your son are sleeping better now?

I went through the same thing with my son, that 12:00 feeding, and not knowing if he was waking because he was hungry or just wanted mom…

I can tell you that some babies still need to eat once during the night at 8 months old. If he eats and then goes back to sleep easily and for the rest of the night, he may still need the feeding, but beware of this continuing too long, or becoming multiple wakings, and it becoming just habit.

Here is a link to an article you may find helpful:

I do hope things are going well!
