I have a 7 month old daughter, who has been napping at 9 am and 12:30/1. She goes to sleep for the night between 6 and 6:45, just depending on how her naps have been that day.
I've noticed that she often yawns around 4 or 4:30 pm. She generally makes it until bedtime in a decently cheerful mood, though. But her naps are sometimes short during the day – around 40 min.
Do you think I should institute a 3rd nap for her? Or perhaps put her to bed earlier? She already goes to bed fairly early, so I don't think this is a good option, but I'm nervous about introcing an additional nap into the schedule.
Many/most 7 month olds have 3 naps at this age, so that would not be out of the ordinary. It's usually just a short catnap that's 30-45 minutes and then bedtime can still be relatively early. I would try it and see if she will take it since she does seem tired. Most will lose it by 8 or 9 months, though, so if she doesn't take it, now that she hasn't been taking it, I wouldn't worry too much about it, since she seems to be happy. Some babies never have the 3rd nap. Overall, it sounds like you're doing just fine. Good luck!
Contrary to Nicole's recommendations, my 6.5 months old son seems to be napping best and longest for his 3rd nap, usually 45min to an hour, his 2 earlier naps seldom past the 30min mark. :(
Should I wake him up? I usually let him sleep 5 or 530 latest so that he will be awake for 3 hours before bedtime. Usual bed time is around 730, but I am secretly hoping by letting him nap more in the late afternoon, we can shift bed time till 8pm.
To wake or not to wake? Very hot topic. Personally, I would wake him so he's awake longer before bed and keep bed time closer to 7:30pm but I stress that that's just what I have found works better with my babies and I'm sure other people would disagree. Ideally the earlier naps should be a bit longer but some babies just don't seem to sleep well during the day despite concentrated sleep training. When does he wake in the morning? I've always made sure my babies were awake by 7am to start the day too. Good luck!
Any particular reason why you want your babies to be awake by 7am? I just started sleep training him, he falls asleep about 10-15min faster than pre-sleep training days, but have been waking up at 6.30am (usually the wake up time ranges from 7 to 8.30)
It's haaard, I feel more tired than pre training days cos to be more consistent and letting him fall back asleep after feeding is more time consuming than just patting/rocking him. :(
