Weaning Pacifier at Bedtime; Sleep Training with(out) pacifier?

My daughter was once a good sleeper and then the dreaded 4 month sleep regression set it.  We thought that part of it was due to her acid reflux, but now that we're getting that treated she's still having issues.  She takes a pacifier and needs the pacifier or nursing to drift off.  I bought the sleep guide and tried the 'Chair' method, it didn't seem to make a difference unless I gave my daughter her pacifier.  I would let her cry until she was getting increasingly upset and then would give her the pacifier but I feel like this is doing more harm.  Once she is down (at the beginning of the night) she usually sleeps for about 3 hours.  However, after she wakes she will not sleep in her crib for more than 15 minutes.  She wants to sleep in my bed and I've even gone so far as to put the co-sleeper back in my room…that sometimes won't even work unless I lay my pillowcase down and trick her into thinking she still in my bed.  I've also tucked my pillowcase over her cribsheet so she can smell me.  I work and commute an hour in so I need to get some sleep, however I can get it.  I suppose my questions are the following:

1.  How do I wean her from needing to pacify at night?  She constantly is waking for me to give her the pacifier and wants to nurse if she gets too upset.

2.  If I'm trying a sleep training method such as the 'Chair' method, should I implement the same tactics every time she wakes up or is it just when she initially goes down?

3.  If she is so hooked on the pacifier, should I wean the pacifier first and then try sleep training?  (i.e. let her lay with me to sleep, if she'll do it without a pacifier until it is not needed at all, before implementing any type of sleep training.)

By the way, we also still swaddle her in the swaddleme blankets.  She will not sleep for more than 20 minutes if we don't do that.  Maybe that's a topic for another time….

Thank you for the help!

Hi-

1. Yes, I would recommend that you work to transition her from needing the
pacifier to go to sleep and to stay asleep. Her ability to learn to go to sleep
on her own and to go back to sleep at night when she wakes will really only
happen once she’s no longer dependent on the pacifier to go to sleep. You can try and work on naps first, and as she gets the hang of it, remove the pacifier from her bedtime, and then move on to night wakings too. There is really no magic answer, either you can take it away all at once, or work on one thing at a time.

2. If you are doing the chair method, yes, you want to be consistent and treat middle of the night wakings the same as you do bedtime. FYI- Many times, falling alseep at night is easier to learn than those middle of the night wakings.

3. You can handle the pacifier and sleep training at the same time, or one and then the other as you suggest. it is really okay to do it however you feel the most comfortable. One one hand, doing it all at once will probably make for a quicker transition, and on the other hand, it may feel like a more gentle approach to do the pacifier then teaching her to sleep in her bed at night. The choice is yours!

And… Keep swaddling her if she seems to like it and can not get out of it!

I hope that this helps! Good luck!!!
