Too long of naps?

My daughter had her 4 month appointment today and I brought my sleep logs.  After looking at them my pediatrician recommended shortening each nap by about 5 min. to get more sleep time at night and hopefully reduce wake up times and early rising.  Right now she sleeps about 4.5-5 hours during the day broken into 3 naps and is up 3 times at night.  She goes down between 6-6:30 using Weissbluth Method A.  My understanding is better daytime sleep means better night time sleep, so it seems his suggestion may not work.  Thoughts?

Hi Melissa,

At this age, most babies have an awake time between naps between 1-2 hours so I would also take that into consideration for your baby when looking at her overall schedule and day time sleep amount.

And yes, typically, we do believe that good daytime sleep helps with better nighttime sleep. Your doctor's recommendation seems to be based on thinking that your daughter is waking at night because of too much daytime sleep. And that could be true. However, there could also be other reasons for her waking and I would be worried that if too much sleep during the day is NOT the reason, then by going in and waking her early from naps, may actually create more problems.

Now, without many details about how she wakes at night, now she falls sleep or how she goes back to sleep, I can't really speculate what else might be contributing to her night wakings. However, for a baby this age, it is not uncommon for them to still need 1-3 feedings at night. And this could certainly be true for her if she's sleeps 4-5 hours during the day and she may not be getting enough to eat during the day.

You might try seeing if you can get more milk to her during the day to see if that helps. Also, make sure she is only feeding until drowsy either at bedtime or when she wakes and that you are laying her down still awake so she learns to fall asleep on her own (if she hasn't already) because this might also be a factor in her night wakings.

Here is a post on 4 month schedules that you might also find helpful:

Thanks for your reply.

She goes down either awake or fully asleep, but if she goes down awake she can put herselft to sleep.

Her awake time is no longer than 2 hours, but generally closer to 1 hour 45 min.

I do believe she might still be hungry at night.  She is still a small girl at 12lbs and some change and usually takes a full feeding during the night.  I feed on demand and some days we have to go to a almost dark room for her to feed since my twins distract her.

The past 2 days I woke her from her naps and she ended up getting up 4 times, so I do think it will create more problems.

We will just keep chugging along and I hope with keeping her wake times short and protecting her sleep this will resolve by 6 months.

Hi Melissa,

Another thought is gently unlatching her when she feeds at night before she's fully asleep so that she can then continue to fall asleep on her own. It's very possible that she will outgrow these night wakings as she gets closer to 6 months. Sleep training becomes more successful as they get older and are more able to self-soothe.

Keep us posted!

Just a little update.

Things are going well here (fingers crossed it stays that way).  She is down to  1-2 night wakings and having a nice long period of 5-7 hours.

I have started unlatching her before she falls asleep in the middle of the night.  She protestes for about a min. and then falls asleep.

It seems we are on the right track!
