My son will be 4 mths next week.  At around 6'oclock he has a bath-message-story-then I rock him for a few minutes and set him down in his crib.  Most of the time he does fall asleep but half the time he cries it out.  He wakes again approx 15 minutes of me lying down (we share the same room) and this could be nine or 10 at night, its like he knows I am in th eroom.  When he sleeps he makes constant noises and it keep sme awake-a constant stirrer i guess i'd say and with moans and groans – if youwill.  I then have to go pick him up and takehim to bed with me and the noises stop and he sleeps with me until around 1 or 2 am for a feeding and goes back to bed with me becuase setting him back in his crib would be a no no.  Plus I am a full time student so my sleep in kinda important.  I feel like this is gonna bite me right in the rear but i don't knwo how to make him sleep more soundly- i just feel so hopeless withthat.  during the day he won't sleep, if its a weekend he sleep with me for a nap but by himself he just wont' maybe he'll fall asleep but take 30 min naps and when i get home he is so cranky and won't settle for nothing else but my arms and even then sometimes that won't work.  I like to keep him awake till his 6pm bath time.  Please! any suggesetions would be so great!

First of all, hang in there. I know it's tough and can completely understand. My son was a pretty horrible sleeper the first 9 months.

My first thoughts are this: have you check out the 4 month old sleep post and 4 month old schedule on Nicole's blog? If not, you can find them here: 4 month old sleep, 4 month old shcedule. Compare how your current schedule is different or similar to the one Nicole recommends and then see if you can make any adjustments that might help.

It could be that the time you go to bed happens to coincide with one of his light sleep cycles. Have you tried using a white noise machine or some other white noise like an ocean waves CD playing at night so he doesn't "hear" you come to bed so much? This might also help with how his noises keep you awake. My son was a noisy sleeper too and I know exactly what you mean about being kept away or on edge that the noises mean he's waking.

I would also say picking him up and bringing him to bed each time he does that first wake up might led to a sleep association problem later on. It's best if you can work on feeding him, if need be, and working on getting him resettled in his own bed.

What is your current nap routine during the weekdays? Do you have a nap routine and have you tried darkening the room he naps in? Some kids are really sensitve to daytime light during naps.

I would also recommended downloading Nicole's 7 Common Napping Mistakes and see if there are any tips in there that might help. You find it HERE.

Please post back and we will continue to troubleshoot and hopefully get you on the road to better sleeping and napping.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

Preston doesnt have a nap schedule and he sleeps randomly all day.  Sometimes he sleeps from 15 min to 1.5 hours at a time.  He has a bedtime schedule but sometimes keeping him up till six can be daunting.

My room is pretty dark but as for white noise.  i have a fan that goes in our room but a cd would keep me up as well.

I will definatly post again. And I willl check out those links.  thanks alot

Yes, do let us know how it's going. It does sound like getting him more on a day time schedule would be helpful….not just for naps but a good daytime schedule can help with more consistent nighttime sleep pattern.
