Hi

It's so reassuring to read all the posts and problems that are not unique to us! My lo is 6 months old next week. I started the extinction CIO method 2 days ago and just wanted to make sure it was ok to do. I have unsuccessfully tried Pantley and Ferber methods latter just made him angry and the former made him hate his cot so we ended up co sleeping!! I never intended to go down this route but I'm at my wits end with lack of sleep. Ive been getting v angry and shouting at him in night then feel guilty and hate myself also beginning to resent parenting which makes it worse as he is a lovely happy little boy. anyway he sleeps at 6pm after bedtime routine, wakes for cuddle and dummy one hour later (straight to sleep and back in bed) whimpers and dream feeds at 9 and 11pm. But downhill after this as between 1-6 am he can be up 3-4 times for dummy and cuddles-sometimes taking hour to settle. Nb he has another feed between 2.3-3.30. He's a small feeder so I'm not cutting these night feeds yet which I dont mind waking for- it's the in between wakings causing problems. Anyway started CIO few days ago but he's got a cold now- not severe so is it ok to continue? Also I started weaning him off his dummy few days before starting method and am putting him in cot for CIO rather than continue cosleeping. First night cried for 30mins in our bed and once asleep put him in cot. Had his 2 dreamfeeds and next woke at 2.20 for feed after which CIO for an hour (maybe realized in cot again) slept till 4am-cried so brought to bed, slept another hour then woke for dummy and stayed asleep till 6. Should I not have given in at 4 and 5 am? Doesn't want morningfeed till 6am. Tonight bed at 6 in cot- cried for 20 mins, woke again at 6.45 and cried for 30 mins- not a peep since and it's 9pm. Sorry for the ridiculously long post but wondering if what I'm doing is ok whilst hes got a cold, if it works can I remove dummy move him to his cot and CIO all at same time or does that make me a terrible mother? I just wanted it over and done with asap :(

Thanks in advance for feedback

Ps. I'm still rocking him till asleep before putting in bed and giving him his dummy for naps. Will this confuse him as I put him down awake at night without dummy to CIO at bedtime?

Please help!

Hi Aishi,

I think you've got a good start here. I think it's okay to continue with CIO while he has a cold but you might want to modify it a bit until he's feeling better.

I do think that it would better for you if you were to teach him to fall asleep on his own at bedtime rather than just use CIO for when he wakes a night. This can be confusing to him. If he starts to learn how to fall asleep on his own, then he could very well start to do better on his night wakings. Also, if your goal is to have him sleeping all night in his own cot, then you would want to not bring him to bed with you for the early morning wakings as this again, can be confusing to him.

The key with any sleep training program is to be consistent. Create your plan and then stick with it consistently for a few weeks.

I would probably wait to work on weaning from the pacifier and moving him to his own cot until he is feeling better though. Hopefully he's on the mend now.

You might find Nicole's ebook, The 3 step system to help your child sleep to be helpful for creating your strategy of weaning him from the pacifier, moving him to his own bed and implementing CIO. You can read about it here: http://babysleepsite.com/services

Keep us posted on how it's going.
