Hi, I have a baby girl who is just turning 4 months this week. She really is a good kid. during the day she naps 3 times either in her bed or with me in the pram when we are out and about. Around six in the evening she starts rubbing her eyes so I put her in her bed, a little crying and the dummy and she sleeps for a little while. Then she wakes up to eat and then it starts…it is very difficult to put her to bed each night. To me it seems as if she knows this is a much longer sleep and she is resisting. I know I made the mistake of giving her a dummy to sleep (for two reasons you can't take away her tumb and she started when young using my nipple as a dummy which was very painful). So as a result – after we finally around 11 or midnight put her to bed – she also wakes up when the dummy falls out.  This in addition to the 3 hours feedings, is making me exhausted. I don't know what to do to help her nor do I know if I should stop using the dummy and if so how as she uses it during the day to sotthe herself to fall asleep for her naps. I appreciate any advice. Many thanks!

Hi Gwendo,

The 4 month mark can be a tricky spot. Often baby sleep habits will change at this time. If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out these two posts on 4 month old sleep and schedules.

You don't mention what kind of schedule she currently has, (i.e. naps same time everyday, how long naps, bedtime, etc.) but if she's not already on good schedule, I'd recommend working on starting to get her on a consistent schedule. A good day time routine can often lead to better sleep at night. Also, a nap in her stroller during day may not be a restorative enough nap for her to be getting a full rest, so if this something that she's doing often, you might want work on changing that.

I'd also recommend reading this post about sleep associations to better understand how your daughter is using the dummy for sleep. This is definitely a habit you will want to break sooner rather later.

Please post back with an update and we'll see if there's more that we can offer as suggestions to help.
